Education & Training

Dr. Hession is a Boston native, and she's spent most of her life on the East Coast. She earned a prestigious Jefferson Scholarship to the University of Virginia, where she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology. She then went on to attend medical school at Columbia University and completed her dermatology residency at Boston University.

Clinical Interests

One of the aspects of dermatology that appeals most to Dr. Hession is the opportunity to educate patients about good skin care. She uses these "teachable moments" to help patients understand the importance of protecting their skin from the sun's harmful rays. She also helps patients learn how to scan their bodies for suspicious moles or other growths. That information can help lead to the early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers.

Beyond that, she has several specific clinical interests:

  • Teenage and adult acne, particularly female hormonal acne
  • Treatment of acne scarring
  • Skin cancer prevention and treatment
  • Cosmetic dermatology, including lasers, neurotoxins, and fillers.

Dr. Hession has published extensively in the dermatology literature on such topics as psoriasis and acne, including an extensive review article in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology on treatment options for acne scarring.

Personal Interests

If you're looking for Dr. Hession on the weekends, your best bet is looking outside. An avid runner and cyclist, she's completed many marathons and long-distance bike rides. During the winter, she's a regular on Lake Tahoe's slopes, while summers are spent biking in Marin or hiking and camping in Yosemite and other California state parks.
